Fairfield University’s CHP System
Fairfield University received state grants from Connecticut of $2.3 million to begin buidling it’s own CHP system. Fairfield University is lucky to have a system already in place to provide for power and heating through cogeneration and creating it’s own system will make the university independent and save money in the long run. The CHP system is supposed to provide 99 percent of the electricity used on campus and 70 percent of the heating requirements. This move by the university and the state in offering the grants is very energy friendly. With the growing demand for energy, the concerns over the environment, and so many other issues involved, it is good to see this change. Other universities should take similar initiatives for energy concerns. Cogeneration is a way of producing electricity from burning natural gas or other fuel which also produces heat which can be used in cooling and heating of other areas as well. It allows for producing electricity, heating, and cooling all at once for more efficient energy production.
