Photovoltaic Solar Panels
The term ‘photovoltaic’ comes from the Greek; “photo” meaning light and “voltaic” meaning electric. Photovoltaic’s, or PV’s, are arrays of cells containing a solar photovoltaic material that converts energy from sunlight into direct current electricity. Photovoltaic solar panels have become more popular and sophisticated during recent years. These solar cells are able to generate electricity directly from solar energy due to the principles outlining the photovoltaic effect. Basically, when the solar cells capture sunlight, the particles in the sunlight (better known as photons) cause the electron to get excited. When the electrons get excited, there’s a voltage difference and electricity is created. This is why there are so many flat cells aligned on solar panels. The more cells there are the more photons and electrons there are, resulting in more electricity.
The photovoltaic solar cell is the foundation of a solar collection panel, or solar panel. They are most commonly made from crystalline silicon, which acts as a semiconductor. When linked together, these solar cells produce a ‘photovoltaic module’, or a solar panel. Solar panels have been around for over a century, although at first, they weren’t anything special. During the mid-20th century, they began producing photovoltaic solar panels made of silicon, and the solar energy industry began.
Popularity of Photovoltaic Solar Panels
Popularity of photovoltaic solar panels has doubled every two years for the past 10 years. To date, it is the world’s fastest growing energy technology. According to the Renewable’s Global Status Report of 2009, there was 15,200 megawatts worth of PV installations total in the world. Various methods of installation include rooftop panels, on the walls of buildings, and even ground-mounted grid-tied electrical systems. And due to the advances in technology and increases in manufacturing scale, the cost of photovoltaic solar panels has steadily declined as years go by.
The Future of Photovoltaic Solar Panels
The future of photovoltaic is uncertain, however according to recent statistics, these solar powered generators are continuing to increase in popularity. And with the world in need of a new, renewable energy source, PV solar panels are not going anywhere anytime soon. With the prices the way they are (cheap!) and with manufacturers able to keep up with the demand, prices shouldn’t inflate anytime soon either, and one day, who knows, maybe the entire world will run off solar energy.
Currently, and in the future we should be ready to see more photovoltaic solar panels used in outer space, so energy can continue to provide power to countries living in poverty, as well as provide energy to everyone else. Space-based solar power is becoming more and more popular as experts continue to create new, efficient and effective sources of energy.
